At Birdslife, we know that some of the most valuable bird knowledge in the world does not come from laboratories or research papers. It comes from people like you, backyard birders who have spent thousands of hours watching, feeding, and listening to birds. That is why Community Reviews are such an important part of what we do.
This page is where we share real experiences, field observations, and honest product feedback from the Birdslife community. These are not paid endorsements.
They are not curated highlights selected to make products look good. They are real voices from real bird lovers who want to help other members of the community make better decisions.
To share your own experience, visit our Contact page or follow the submission guidelines below. You can also explore all our expert-tested gear reviews in our Birdwatching & Gear section.

Why Community Reviews Matter
Expert testing gives you one perspective, the perspective of a professional with controlled testing conditions. Community reviews give you something different and equally valuable: the long-term, real-world experience of dozens of ordinary birders using products in backyards, balconies, forests, wetlands, and parks across the country.
A pair of binoculars that performs beautifully in Daniel Carter’s field tests in North Carolina might behave differently in a humid Florida wetland, a dry Arizona desert, or a rainy Pacific Northwest forest.
A bird feeder that Daniel rates as squirrel-resistant may face a different kind of local squirrel problem that requires community input to solve.
Community voices fill those gaps. Together, our expert reviews and your community feedback create the most complete, honest picture of any product or practice.
What Community Members Share
We welcome community contributions in three main categories:
1. Product Experiences & Gear Reviews
Have you used a bird feeder, binoculars, nest box, bird bath, spotting scope, or birding camera for a season or more? Your long-term experience is incredibly valuable. Community members can share:
- How a product has held up over time in real-world conditions.
- Performance details that short-term testing cannot capture.
- Comparisons between products you have tried.
- Tips and modifications that made a product work better.
- Honest opinions, including what you did not like.
2. Bird Sightings & Backyard Bird Reports
We love hearing about the birds our community members are seeing. If you have an exciting backyard sighting, a notable migration arrival, an unusual species visit, or a feeder observation worth sharing, we want to hear it. Community bird sightings help us keep our seasonal content and migration updates accurate and timely.
Useful sightings include:
- First-of-season arrivals of migratory species in your area.
- Unusual or rare birds visiting backyard feeders.
- Notable behavior observations, nesting, courtship, aggression, and feeding patterns.
- Successful backyard habitat projects that attracted new species.
3. Backyard Habitat Success Stories
Have you transformed your backyard or balcony into a bird-friendly habitat? Did adding native plants bring in more species? Did a specific feeder placement dramatically increase your bird variety?
Stories like yours inspire and teach other bird lovers far more effectively than any guide.
We feature selected habitat success stories on this page and in our Attracting Birds & Garden Tips section.

Our Community Review Standards
We want Community Reviews to be genuinely helpful. We review all submissions before publishing and reserve the right to decline or edit submissions that:
- Contain promotional language that appears commercially motivated.
- Include false, defamatory, or harmful claims about individuals or organizations.
- Are duplicate submissions or reviews of products the submitter has not personally used?
- Violate any part of our Terms & Conditions.
We do not edit reviews to make products sound better or worse than your honest experience. Negative reviews are as welcome as positive ones; honest feedback is what makes this section valuable.
